At Guardabarranco we offer volunteers the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in rural Nicaraguan life and traditional farming. The aim of the home-stay experience is cultural exchange. Volunteers come and share their unique skills, whatever they may be, and in turn learn about the agricultural techniques and the culture of their host families. Set high in the mountains of Nicaragua, there’s no more picturesque setting to gain an understanding of the rural way of life here, learn about another culture and share something of your own.
We believe that individuals from all walks of life have unique skills that can be of value to host families. Volunteers for our homestays need to be ready to work hard and accepting of new and different ways of living. In our homestay program volunteers integrate with the rhythms of family life, working when they work and eating when they eat.
The average work day begins at 7am and goes until around 2pm, 5 days a week. As with all agricultural work, the type and quantity of work varies based on season and what is called for. Different educational activities can also develop in the garden. For example, schools and communities can organize theoretical and practical cooking courses so that children and young people have a chance to learn about local products and food traditions.
We are currently looking for a volunteer with experience in making chocolate from cacao as one of our farms has a large amount of cacao they want to learn to process.
Host families provide a room for volunteers in their own house.
