We have established a Campaign to raise micro-financing for some of the coffee producers in the Nueva Segovia area.
What's the story?
Small coffee farmers and producers in The Nueva Segovia region of Nicaragua have extremely limited resources, financially and in terms of communications, technologies, living arrangements. They rely on coffee, a monoculture crop, for their daily bread. Growing coffee is a delicate, arduous process - a plant takes 3 years to produce fruit that can be harvested. Over the last season, the Central American coffee-producing area lost 40-50% of its crops due to Coffee Rust.
This is a fungus that can completely wipe out certain varieties of coffee, leaving farmers with no income. This is especially devastating for small producers who rely almost entirely on the production to survive.
It is Eco-Nic's mission to improve the local economy and quality of life for small local coffee producers by providing them with microfinancing to enable them to grow their businesses by funding training for their staff, expanding their marketing reach, diversifying their coffee production, or buying equipment they might need to develop technologies on their farms, to give just a few examples.
Econic envisions sustainable, prospering businesses, a sustainable future for coffee production, economic growth and development in the extremely poor rural areas of Nicaragua, a sustainable livelihood for many families, and hot cups of coffee at breakfast time across the world.
This project aims to finance these farms to enable them to diversify crops or varieties of coffee, invest in technologies, training and marketing which can support and grow and improve the quality of their production, and to ultimately grow their business to the point where they become completely self sufficient and prosper, not just survive. This is not just a hand out, this is an investment in the future of coffee, and the families that produce it.
We need support...
...Because most of the world relies on these people for our morning coffee, they work so hard for so little and it would be great to help them grow, and grow a little ourselves. Plus you get to keep drinking your cup of coffee every morning - it's going to taste all the better knowing that you are actively supporting the livelihood of the people who produced it. Everything and everyone is all interconnected; by giving this gift to others, you are giving it to yourself too.
